"Under A Hunter's Moon" - Cover Reveal » Discussions

About The Cover Design

  • May 2, 2018
Before I go into details, I want to thank Claudia over at Ceejay Designs for this wonderful cover. She took my very rough ideas for a cover and did several different draft designs, including a pretty major change in direction.

The cover design for the 1st Edition of "Under A Hunter's Moon" was created for me by a fellow author, who writes paranormal romances. And as much as I loved the design, I got feedback from several people that they thought my story was a PNR story, because of the cover. That got me thinking about how important cover design is to the reader's perceptions of what to expect...

Enter social media, and my search for stock covers that might work better for the story I wanted people to expect.

I looked around for weeks, and saw a lot of great urban fantasy/paranormal covers, but nothing that really fit what I felt my story was about. In desperation, I even tried to create my own over, and after getting feedback from fellow writers, I realized that I didn't have a clue what I was trying to achieve.

So, I went back to social media and asked around. And that's when Ceejay Designs came to my attention. I reached out, and after some discussions, we agreed on pricing based on the scope of my planned projects. But I wasn't able to afford the costs at that time. Thankfully, Claudia was kind enough to keep that pricing available until my tax return came in, and we started work.

"Under A Hunter's Moon" was a beast of a cover to get right, because it's the first in a series, and had to set the tone. It also had to define the layout, fonts, and core design for the covers that would follow. There were also issues with my initial concept because I wanted to feature the museum as part of the cover, in some way. However, getting approval to use images of the buildings, or museum displays is very difficult. So we changed direction entirely, and the cover I have now is the result of all Claudia's hard work and a ton of emails.
